Tonke and sustainability

On the way to a greener future

Tonke is committed to sustainability and a greener future. At Tonke, we believe that sustainability is not only a responsibility, but also an opportunity to create positive change. We strive to reduce our impact on the environment and make a positive impact on society. Here are some of the ways we integrate sustainability into our business:

Tonke Lands

We all enjoy the outdoors. Yet it chafes that we are burdening nature with our campervans and we want to do something about it. We are ambitious in this respect and want to develop into a CO2 positive company in the coming years. One of the ways we do this is by taking the initiative to set up Tonke Land.

Tonke Land is our initiative to protect and preserve natural environments by issuing certificates to Tonke drivers. These funds are used to buy land in the Netherlands, but also elsewhere in Western Europe, where we create nature to offset our collective CO2 footprint. We want diverse forests, with clearings and lots of biodiversity, where there might also be room for regenerative agriculture.

But the knife cuts both ways. There is an additional benefit for participants. These lands can also be visited as camping sites, at least, if local laws allow it!

Percentage of women in engineering

At Tonke, we recognise the importance of gender diversity in the engineering sector. In 2019, 13.3% of those employed within engineering in the Netherlands were women compared to 26.7% at Tonke. We strive to create a working environment where everyone, regardless of their gender, has equal opportunities and growth possibilities. Although the engineering sector has historically been male-dominated, we aim to increase the percentage of women in engineering positions. We encourage women to apply and provide a supportive and inclusive work environment where everyone’s talent and skills are valued.

Student internships

We are committed to mentoring young talent. Therefore, we offer internships to students. This enables them to gain valuable experience and learn in practice. We enjoy sharing our knowledge and passion with the next generation.

Staff with a distance to the labour market

At Tonke, we embrace diversity and inclusion. We create opportunities for people at a distance from the labour market by offering them a workplace and training. By supporting them, we give them the opportunity to develop and become a full part of our team.

Green power and gas

At Tonke, we strive to minimise our ecological footprint. That is why we use green gas and electricity in our production processes. By using renewable energy sources, we reduce our CO2 emissions and contribute to a cleaner future.

Working with local suppliers and in-house production in the Netherlands

At Tonke, we prefer local suppliers and keep our production in-house in the Netherlands. By sourcing and producing locally, we reduce transport distances and stimulate the local economy.

Production with sheltered workshop (refugees)

We are proud to work with social workshops, where refugees, among others, get the chance to develop their skills and gain work experience. In this way, we contribute to refugees’ integration into society and offer them a platform for personal growth.

Quality

At Tonke, quality is paramount. Our products are not only beautiful to look at, they are also exceptionally well built. We carefully select all materials used based on their functionality, durability and aesthetic value. We do not compromise when it comes to quality. By choosing very high-quality materials and craftsmanship, we make products that last and have a smaller impact on the environment. Our campervans are designed to stand the test of time and offer decades of travel enjoyment. We are committed to delivering products that meet our customers’ highest expectations while contributing to a sustainable and responsible future.

Emission-free vehicles

We understand the importance of clean mobility. That is why we strive to produce emission-free vehicles. By innovating and using electric technologies, we reduce our impact on the environment and promote a more sustainable travel experience.

Waste minimisation, separation and circular production

At Tonke, we strive for efficient and responsible waste separation in all our business processes. We separate the different types of waste, such as paper, plastic, glass and metal. By prioritising waste separation, we reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and promote a circular approach to materials.

Besides minimising waste, we promote circular production. This means that both on the input side we choose recycled materials as much as possible, and on the output side we build in such a way that materials can be easily separated at the end of their useful life. For example, we use recycled polyester curtains in our campervans. By reusing materials, we reduce the demand for new raw materials and contribute to a circular economy.

Materials with a traceable history and FSC label

We are committed to using materials with a traceable history. This means we closely monitor the origin of our raw materials to ensure they are responsibly sourced. Moreover, we work with wood certified by the FSC label, which means it comes from sustainably managed forests.

Vegan leather products

At Tonke, we are committed to animal welfare and reducing our reliance on animal materials. That’s why we also offer vegan leather options for our interior products. These alternatives are not only animal-friendly, but also of very high quality and aesthetically pleasing.
